From Ideas to Action: How to Actually Move Your Coaching Business Forward, the View from an Enneagram 7
I wish everyone had an Enneagram Type 7 as a friend. Enneagram 7’s don’t just attend the party - they are the party. They bring conversations to life - they are just full of energy, ideas, and possibility.
They are optimistic, imaginative, and endlessly generative. If there’s one way forward, they’ll find five. If there’s something to look forward to, they’re already there - planning it, dreaming it, and getting others excited about it.
But underneath that energy is something quieter, and often unseen. A 7 is not just running toward joy - they might also be running away. Away from the possibility of being stuck, deprived, or sitting in pain.
So 7’s like to keep moving. They can sometimes desperately search for more - more ideas, more plans, more options.
Because to an Enneagram 7, stillness can feel like a trap.
I was talking with a dear friend recently about her coaching business. The business is still in its infancy, and, like many new coaches, she was standing at the edge of everything that hadn’t been done yet.
Website. Branding. Offers. Content. Marketing. And then, as it often does, the comparison started.
As she spoke with me, her voice picked up speed. It got louder, even frantic, as she listed everything she hadn’t started yet, and everything other coaches seemed to already be doing.
If you’ve ever been there, you know the feeling. It’s usually not a lack of ideas; it’s too many ideas that have no place to land.
As she talked, I could see it all playing out in real time. The ideas were abundant, but they were coming faster than she could ground them. She was jumping between possibilities, planning ahead, comparing, and expanding. She was trying to hold everything open so she wouldn’t feel limited.
That’s the gift of a 7. And, it’s where they can get lost. Because when everything is possible, nothing feels anchored. So I interrupted her gently and asked one powerful question:
“Who do you want to coach?”
Time seemed to slow down. Her voice softened, and then something visibly shifted in her face. A grounded clarity came in. She knew.
She already knew who she cared about, what she’s good at, and where she could add value. And as she stepped into that moment of confidence, anxiety loosened its grip on them. The noise quieted, and she stepped into steady direction.
For a 7, this is the quiet work. Choosing one path doesn’t mean losing all the others. It means finally experiencing one fully. At their best, 7’s are not just chasing happiness - they’re staying with it. They’re able to actually receive what is right in front of them.
Joy without urgency.
Vision without overwhelm.
Action without escape.
That shift starts the moment an abstract idea becomes a confident decision.
If your ideas feel bigger than your ability to act on them, you’re not alone. Sometimes all it takes is the right question and a place to land.
